How to blur faces in a video for free

redact.photos blurs faces in a video or a photo right in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, there is no sign-up and no watermark. It works on a computer and on a recent phone.

Blur faces in a video

  1. Open the tool and drop your clip on the page, or tap Choose. MP4, MOV and WebM clips up to 1080p and about 5 minutes work.
  2. Wait while the clip is looked through. Faces are found twice a second and blurred in between, so a face that moves stays covered.
  3. Press play and watch the whole preview. Untick faces that should stay visible.
  4. Missed something? Press Box and drag over it. A box you draw stays for the whole clip.
  5. Press Save. The clip plays through once while it is saved, with its sound kept. Watch the saved file before you post it.

Blur licence plates

Press Box and drag over the plate. In a photo the box covers that spot; in a clip it stays for the whole clip, which suits dashcam and doorbell footage where the car stays put. For a car that moves across the frame, draw a box wide enough to cover its path.

Blur faces in a photo

Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP photo up to 25 MB. Faces are found in a few seconds, including smaller faces further back. Untick any you want to keep, add boxes for anything else, then save. The photo keeps its format.

What to check before you share

  • Detection can miss things: tiny faces, faces turned away, faces behind glass or in shadow. Look through the preview every time.
  • Reflections, name badges, screens, house numbers and school logos can identify people too. Box them.
  • Low strength can leave details recognizable. Use a solid cover for sensitive details.

Why nothing is uploaded

Footage with bystanders, children or cars is often the very footage you would rather not hand to a website. Here the work happens inside the browser tab, so the file never leaves your device.
